The Spoonbill is a super lightweight two person sleep system designed and manufactured under the exacting and quality standards of Feathered Friends. This bag has been in development for more than 8 years – much longer than any other new style we’ve ever brought to market – and it is exciting to finally offer it to the outdoor community.

While the inspiration for this bag came from the fast and light climbing styles of our top athletes it has proven to be a perfect solution for the outdoor user who is looking to significantly lighten their load while not compromising on comfort or performance. The real challenge of a system like this was keeping the weight as low as possible while making sure warmth was not sacrificed.

When there are two users sleeping in the same bag the increase in thermal efficiency is significant but only if the bag they are in is able to trap that heat and not allow convective heat loss. The Design of the hood and collars allow each user their own individual adjustments without negatively affecting the other person. Making the hood three dimensional, like out warmest expedition weight bags, was the key to this success. The hood design allows each user to pull the draw cord tight around their face with little to no impact on the other user. This same principle was the driving factor in the collar design which is extremely unique, again allowing each user to pull the draw cord tight around their neck while not pulling it off of their bag partner.

The Spoonbill – like all Feathered Friends sleeping bags – uses a water resistant shell fabric. Schoeller Nanosphere and Pertex UL fabrics are super lightweight high tenacity mini rip-stop fabrics that offer great water resistance while maintaining excellent breathability. These fabrics, paired with 23 ounces our high quality 850 fill – or 900 fill - down make this bag extremely warm. We are not putting a temperature rating on this bag as rating a bag for one person is challenging enough and adding two people to the mix makes it nearly impossible. The bag has 5” of loft which is what our standard 20 degree bags have but with two people inside the warmth rating goes up significantly. This bag has been tested extensively on Denali for the past five years and the feedback has been that it is plenty warm on that mountain for the athletes who were using it.
